The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is arguably one of the best looking sports cars on the planet, but under that beautiful exterior lies a performance-limited Maserati platform. But if Alfa executives get their way, the next-generation 8C could borrow its underpinnings from Ferrari’s new California.
Alfa CEO Luca de Meo is reportedly pushing for a high-performance GTA version of the 8C, and a Ferrari-based version could just be the answer, according to Motor Authority. However, Ferrari doesn’t like to give out its top level engineering and construction practices, so a Ferrari-based Alfa could be a difficult task — even for just 500 examples.
Although Ferrari doesn’t like to platform share among its Fiat siblings, it’s not completely unheard of. Back in 2004 and 2005, Ferrari lent its Enzo platform to Maserati to create the MC12, granted it was for a limited production of about 55 vehicles – 50 of which were sold to the public.
Whatever platform the 2010 8C winds up riding on, it sounds as if Alfa has its sights set on making it one of the best looking and best performing cars in the world.

I thought the California was based on a shortened Maserati GranTurismo chassis, and was originally developed to be sold as a Maserati? So the only way this story makes sense is if the 8C is based on the old Maserati GranSport/Spider chassis.

Then again, perhaps Alfa could offer Ferrari a convertible version of their MiTo in return, to sell alongside the California.. they could call it the Ferrari BajaCalifornia, or Tijuana! Or why not the Ferrari Me Too?

It does look awesome. I have to say that it came to my mind when I saw the California. If Alfa achieve the “making it one of the best looking and best performing cars in the world.” goal, they definitely are going to be back in the game as a Superb manufacturer just like a couple of decades ago.

How can they make the 2010 8C better looking? An impossible task.

If Ferrari gave their California platform, then they would lose sales of their car to the cheaper but same platform 8C Competizione. Corporate cannibalism.
